“I promise to exercise daily and eat healthy.”

Almost everybody says this on the 1st of January. That’s right, it is only said but not done. It is not that easy. How can you eat healthy when there are so many delicacies to devour on? How about rephrasing it to “I’ll cut down my consumption of junk food”. It will be easier. Or you can just add a little nutritional supplement to your regular diet. For example, sprinkling Moringa Powder in your salad or smoothie, taking Ashwagandha on a regular basis (for over all well being), drinking green tea, et cetera. You can switch to Quinoa which is a replacement for rice. It has high protein, iron and manganese content. Many people are not sure about how to cook the grain.

So here’s a recipe.

1. Wash 1 cup of Quinoa properly.

2. Cook in a pressure cooker with double the quantity of water i.e. 2 cups.

3. Let the pressure build in the cooker, then lower the flame and let it cook for 10 minutes.

4. Take a pan, add 1 tbsp of ghee (clarified butter), 1 chopped onion, 1 chopped tomato, green chillies and peas. You can add any vegetables of your choice.

5. Add 1 tsp of Garam Masala (blend of Peppercorns, Cloves, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cardamom, Bay Leaf and Cumin) and 1/2 tsp of Amchoor powder (dried mango powder).

6. Add the boiled Quinoa.

7. Add salt as per taste.

8. Let it cook for 2 more minutes.

9. Serve and garnish with coriander or mint leaves.

Not a fan of drinking milk with Turmeric? Here’s a solution.

I am sure at some point of our lives, our mothers must have forced us to drink turmeric mixed in milk. But not all of us will like its taste. Turmeric has many benefits which is why it has been a part of Indian tradition. To take full advantage of this spice, it should have a good amount Curcumin, say 5%. It the main ingredient of Turmeric. The spice also has anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to prevent cancer, control cholesterol, boost immunity, fight depression and relieve arthritis. It also helps to lose weight and works as an excellent facial mask to get rid of marks, wrinkles and tanning. No wonder it is called the Queen of Spices.

But drinking turmeric in milk is a pain if you are not accustomed to its taste.

So what is the solution?

Turmeric Capsules. That too, vegetarian capsules. All one has to do is swallow 2 capsules per day without even tasting the powder.

Helpful Tip: Whenever you feel you’re going to catch a cold, take 2 capsules of turmeric. Chances are you’ll be as fit as a fiddle.

Let’s erase the stigma of Leprosy

Leprosy is a disease which affects the skin, eyes, respiratory and the nervous system. There are many people in India, China and Africa who are still suffering from this deadly disease. They are restricted from employment opportunities and their development is hindered. As per popular belief, it is considered highly contagious. But there were two people who despite this belief worked for their betterment and proved this belief to be wrong.

Murlidhar Devidas Amte (a.k.a Baba Amte) and Sadhana Amte spent most of their lives for the empowerment of these people. They founded three Ashrams for the treatment of the leprosy patients in Maharashtra. Their first hospital was under a tree. Even their children dedicated their life helping the marginalised sections of the society.

These are the unrecognised heroes of our country. It is sad that magazines and newspapers don’t publish about such heroes often.

It is not Yoga; it is Yog

With International Yog  Day coming up, everybody is all set to practice different aasans  just for this very day, and then forget it until the next International Yog Day. Also, why say “Yoga”? That is not how it should be pronounced. It should be pronounced and written as “Yog”. It is the western part of the world, which has changed it. Being Indians, we are great at aping what others do. Similarly, Lord Ram has become Lord Rama. These nouns are not a part of the English language. They are Sanskrit terms. Let us at least uphold the sanctity of this ancient language as well as our country.

Coming to Yog, we all know how important it is and why one should practice it.  However, it is emphasised that it should be done early in the morning, like at 5 or 6 am. This is where we think, “I cannot get up that early.” If you can’t, it is perfectly alright. You can practice it anytime, provided you have an empty stomach. There are no hard and fast rules.

Organic food reduces toxicity in our body

People go back and forth discussing why organically grown food is good for us and why we should consume it. The question which remains unanswered is, “how does organic food reduce toxicity in the human body?”.

A study was conducted where adults were asked to consume only organic food for one whole week. After the tests were done, the results showed that the level of toxic waste in the body had dropped by 89% . Now that is a pretty significant and big number. This toxicity is an Organophosphate pesticide or just OP Pesticide. It can lead to problems in growth, fertility and development of the body. It can cause autism (a mental condition where forming relationships becomes difficult) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a condition which affects concentration power and focus) in the offsprings.

Sounds like a good reason to eat organic food, eh?

Would you like some organic milk with that coffee?

Yes, there is something called organic milk as well now. So what is the difference between conventional and organic milk? Well, the cattle is fed organic fodder and hay, so they give organic milk. It decreases the level of cholesterol. Chances are that you will live a longer life without any heart diseases. Sounds sweet to me! Also the taste. It tastes better than the conventional milk.

However, researchers are still trying to find out the amount of Iodine content in both types of milk. This depends on how much Iodine the cattle is getting from the feed it gets. Nobody is still sure which kind is the best.

However, if the cow is healthy and getting a good diet, naturally she is bound to give good quality milk.

Germs are not always at fault for our illness

Most of us blame the germs when we fall sick. That may not be always the case. Sure, maintaining a proper hygiene is important, but the state of our mind also plays a major role in our lifestyle. For instance, we all have a friend who is “on a diet”. But the moment they go for a cheat meal, we have to listen to their guilt and rants. Turns out, if you feel guilty because you were trapped by a slice of chocolate cake, you are more likely to gain weight. But if you cherish that delicious, soft and moist slice with no regrets, you are more likely to be happy (this doesn’t mean you can devour one everyday). Similarly, people who worry too much about hygiene, are more likely to fall ill. The focus has to be on boosting your immunity and  maintaining a good diet, not on the germs which are everywhere and can’t even be seen.
