Let’s erase the stigma of Leprosy

Leprosy is a disease which affects the skin, eyes, respiratory and the nervous system. There are many people in India, China and Africa who are still suffering from this deadly disease. They are restricted from employment opportunities and their development is hindered. As per popular belief, it is considered highly contagious. But there were two people who despite this belief worked for their betterment and proved this belief to be wrong.

Murlidhar Devidas Amte (a.k.a Baba Amte) and Sadhana Amte spent most of their lives for the empowerment of these people. They founded three Ashrams for the treatment of the leprosy patients in Maharashtra. Their first hospital was under a tree. Even their children dedicated their life helping the marginalised sections of the society.

These are the unrecognised heroes of our country. It is sad that magazines and newspapers don’t publish about such heroes often.

It is not Yoga; it is Yog

With International Yog  Day coming up, everybody is all set to practice different aasans  just for this very day, and then forget it until the next International Yog Day. Also, why say “Yoga”? That is not how it should be pronounced. It should be pronounced and written as “Yog”. It is the western part of the world, which has changed it. Being Indians, we are great at aping what others do. Similarly, Lord Ram has become Lord Rama. These nouns are not a part of the English language. They are Sanskrit terms. Let us at least uphold the sanctity of this ancient language as well as our country.

Coming to Yog, we all know how important it is and why one should practice it.  However, it is emphasised that it should be done early in the morning, like at 5 or 6 am. This is where we think, “I cannot get up that early.” If you can’t, it is perfectly alright. You can practice it anytime, provided you have an empty stomach. There are no hard and fast rules.

Organic food reduces toxicity in our body

People go back and forth discussing why organically grown food is good for us and why we should consume it. The question which remains unanswered is, “how does organic food reduce toxicity in the human body?”.

A study was conducted where adults were asked to consume only organic food for one whole week. After the tests were done, the results showed that the level of toxic waste in the body had dropped by 89% . Now that is a pretty significant and big number. This toxicity is an Organophosphate pesticide or just OP Pesticide. It can lead to problems in growth, fertility and development of the body. It can cause autism (a mental condition where forming relationships becomes difficult) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a condition which affects concentration power and focus) in the offsprings.

Sounds like a good reason to eat organic food, eh?

Germs are not always at fault for our illness

Most of us blame the germs when we fall sick. That may not be always the case. Sure, maintaining a proper hygiene is important, but the state of our mind also plays a major role in our lifestyle. For instance, we all have a friend who is “on a diet”. But the moment they go for a cheat meal, we have to listen to their guilt and rants. Turns out, if you feel guilty because you were trapped by a slice of chocolate cake, you are more likely to gain weight. But if you cherish that delicious, soft and moist slice with no regrets, you are more likely to be happy (this doesn’t mean you can devour one everyday). Similarly, people who worry too much about hygiene, are more likely to fall ill. The focus has to be on boosting your immunity and  maintaining a good diet, not on the germs which are everywhere and can’t even be seen.

Quinoa can overcome the problem of droughts!

Droughts in the central and western part of India have been an unresolved issue for many years. The monsoon season has not blessed these regions with adequate rainfall leading to scarcity of water for agricultural and domestic purposes. The funds allocated to develop mitigation strategies have not been used efficiently. The gap between the problem and the solution is still at large. However, there still is a ray of hope. But what is this “ray of hope” which can benefit the farmers? Can you think of a crop which requires minimum water to grow? I am sure most of us would probably come up with wheat. But this crop needs the right temperature and about 12-15 inches of rain. How about Quinoa? This cash crop can adjust with any kind of soil, temperature and has minimum water needs. Organic Wellness is providing the seeds of this crop to end the suffering of the farmers community. They are an important part of the OW family and will get help no matter how adverse the situation is.

We have been covered by The Times of India which is one of the most prestigious dailies of the country. For your convenience, the article has been reproduced in this blog post.

Don’t be Monica because there are no “safe solvents”

The general perception that being obsessively clean (which means being like Monica from the TV Series Friends) is a good thing has to change. Cleaning solvents put your health at risk. Not just by direct contact with the skin. It’s a chain you see. Let’s say one day you decide to clean your balcony with lavender fragranced soap/cleanser. Now that gets mixed with the water which is then absorbed by the soil. That very soil of the kitchen garden which grows your “fresh fruits and vegetables”. Eventually, you end up consuming some savoury dish made out of those ingredients. So in the end who is at loss? Too obvious to answer, but it is the person who consumes that dish.

So what can be the solution?

Here’s a thought, instead of cleaning every day with Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide, why not use a plain dry mop? Or with water (if the place is that messy). Or maybe just reduce the usage of solvents to once a week, once in two weeks, whatever suits best.

I am sure all the people who hate cleaning must be feeling pretty good now.

Get drenched in a rainbow of organic colours!

It is that time of the year again in India, when people celebrate colours! Here’s a thought, let’s do it a little differently this year. Switch to organic colours, instead of playing with colours which cause skin problems like rashes, itchiness, et cetera. Synthetic colours have chemicals which put our health at risk. Plus, it is easier to scrub off after a long day of applying red, yellow and green on each other (no need to roam around “coloured up” for a week). Therefore, less water is used. On holi, we waste so much water, first for playing and then for bathing. So many districts are hit by drought currently. It is nice to get drenched in a rainbow of colours but also to take precautions at the same time.

Wishing you all a very happy and safe Holi!
