Get drenched in a rainbow of organic colours!

It is that time of the year again in India, when people celebrate colours! Here’s a thought, let’s do it a little differently this year. Switch to organic colours, instead of playing with colours which cause skin problems like rashes, itchiness, et cetera. Synthetic colours have chemicals which put our health at risk. Plus, it is easier to scrub off after a long day of applying red, yellow and green on each other (no need to roam around “coloured up” for a week). Therefore, less water is used. On holi, we waste so much water, first for playing and then for bathing. So many districts are hit by drought currently. It is nice to get drenched in a rainbow of colours but also to take precautions at the same time.

Wishing you all a very happy and safe Holi!

What is the origin of Organic Farming?

Organic farming has no origin. It was a conventional approach before humans delved into chemistry and found fertilisers. Natural ways were the way to go before the Second World War. After a lot of research, farmers started using chemicals on their farm lands. That was when the Organic Movement rose in Europe. Both the farmers and the consumers revolted against the industrialisation of agriculture. Consumers became more conscious about their health and well being, and preferred organically grown produce. They had realised the harmful effects of these chemicals. This conscious started spreading to different parts of the world which led to an increase in the demand of organically produced fruits and vegetables. As Economics dictates, farmers switched to organic farming. That is why we see such fancy packaging of organic products with a USDA Organic logo in most of the retail stores.

Not just humans, organic farming supports all species!

Let’s not be selfish by thinking of just the mankind. There are many other species who reside with us on the same land. We are all a part of the same food chain, remember? This practice of agriculture encourages biodiversity. It preserves the natural habitat for all the fauna. If they are healthy, they naturally become pest controllers. No need to hire pest control now. So farmers can save money on that note. On the other hand, fertilisers support the growth of algae blooms, a.k.a red tide, which release toxins for microbes in the soil. This results in infertility of the soil. Sometimes it can turn the colour of water into red (now you know why it is also called ‘red tide’). Although, algae is considered a vital part of the food chain, this kind is rather deadly. So let’s do what is in our control and try our best to avoid fertilisers and pesticides.

Sorry, can’t drink tea. I am on a diet.

I am sure we must have heard this statement like a hundred times. People who want to lose weight restrict themselves, or at least try their level best, from consuming calories.  Most of them prefer switching to herbal tea since it increases the body metabolism and burns fat. Fat oxidation increases, reduces risk of getting cancer, boosts immunity, helps to concentrate, brings down sugar level, lowers chances of heart disease, et cetera. So is there a need to exercise? Why not just consume herbal tea like 10 times a day? Well, if only things were that easy. Green tea does help, but it is vital to exercise and maintain a healthy diet. But if you crave for a bar of chocolate, after all who does not, here’s a way to devour it without feeling any guilt. Just have it immediately after you work out, or an hour before you work out. Because that’s when your metabolism is high and it burns the calories instead of storing it as fat. Life just got easier.  So you exercise, drink herbal tea and maybe cheat sometimes by breaking the no-junk-food rule.
